Vintage Sewing Patterns

I made a lot of changes to this bra pattern based on researching examples of bandeau bras from the 20s.* If you were to sew this up directly from the pattern you won't get the results I showed in the photo, it's a very basic pattern that requires the sewist to make a lot of their own adjustments. I used the pattern as the base for my design, adjusted it heavily for fit, and changed a few details to make it more refined. If you sew it directly from the pattern you'll need to - at the very least - adjust it perfectly to fit your bust measurement tightly because it will otherwise hang loosely like a sack and not fit / function as a bandeau bra would (if you lift your arms it'll slide right up). Would say this pattern is for an intermediate sewist who knows how to adjust for fit.

Some quick pattern notes from my adjustments:

  • Added in two bust darts on each bust cup. Gives a more supported fit without compromising on the overall bandeau look too much.
  • Didn't use the pattern for fabric straps, instead used ribbon.
  • Bias bound the edges for a more refined look.

I did a host of other adjustments for fit with the closure so I can't guide you there as I'm keeping those tweaks private, but be sure to factor in give of the material with the closure so it doesn't rip with movement as it should be more fitted for any kind of real wearability.

You can see more photos of it made up in three different fabrics - here in a 1930s rayon fabric, here in a modern stretchy cotton, and here (if you swipe to the second photo) in one of my designer cotton fabrics.

Good luck!
