  • When editing vendor links, especially those for DellaJane, please take the time to scroll down the page and make sure the pattern is no longer available. I cannot link to a specific listing, so link to the top of the page. You have been deleting valid links for me, please slow down the delete key! THanks, alice

    • Alice, I'm so sorry!  I did scroll down & didn't see it/them at all.  I won't delete any more of your links at all, just to be on the safe side.  Sooo, sorry!  :(

  • Hi,

I am not sure why, but you are changing the wording under Gallery to an old, obsolete one...  Why?

    • Ah, so sorry to hear that.  I hope she feels better very soon.

It is possible that the new ones also don't have the right coding, but don't worry about that right now.  There are a myriad of legacy issues on the pattern pages.  A few more won't break the wiki.

I just wanted to head off newly created ones.

    • Ok, thanks!  I can see how keeping up with all of this would be a full-time job!

  • Hello again,

I realize you are new here, so...

We have spent an enourmous amount of time and effort trying to make pages look somewhat uniform.

When you add a page or edit an existing page, please stay with that format.

    That means:

    - Do not bold the pattern name

    - Do not apply header formatting to the first line.

    Thank you,

    tarna (one of the admins)

    • Ok - I think I'm getting the hang of it.  I'm totally new to Wikia and I was struggling w/the pictures most of all.  I tried to make my new pages look like the other ones - comparing side by side.  Guess I didn't quite get it.  Thanks for your patience.  I'm really impressed with the site & excited to be here.  :)  I can't even imagine the amount of time it takes to keep nearly 100,000 pages uniform.  You guys are doing an EXCELLENT job!  :)

One question - I've looked on the help pages & haven't found the answer.  If someone has a pattern on their wishlist how does one find them to message them?

    • Hello again,

Pictures are a bit difficult to format through upload.  I edit in Classic version of the editor (selectable in your Preferences) and Source mode, which lets you set the pixel width.

Yes, uniformity may be a bit boring, but the less fancy formatting, the easier for everyone to get it somewhat right.

If someone put their name on the wishlist, they hopefull used their user name.  Type that in the Search field on top.  If at first you don't succeed, type User: immediately followed by that name.

  • Please take a moment to learn about categories on the wiki before adding more.

Vintage Pattern and Vintage Sewing Pattern are both not valid categories.  We already have Vintage Sewing Patterns as the header category for all patterns on this wiki.

Categories are not search tags.  They create a page with all the pattern pages that feature that category under it.

    Best regards,

    tarna (one of the admins)

    • Ack!  I've only just discovered the wall.  I was totally using them as search tags.  So sorry!

    • Where can I learn about categories?

        Loading editor
    • Click on them.  It will take you to a category page.  You will see what I mean...

Not sure what you mean by the wall?

Sorry if I sound short - I am trying to fight through a flu, and keeping to the point is just easier ;)

As far as learning more - there are the wikia help pages that give general help and guidance.

Categories here are pretty established, and still being cleaned up.  Redundancy (spelling, etc.) is not our friend, as opposed to search tags (which are not necessary, since the wiki is fully indexed).

Please read the About page before you start editing. You can ask questions on the forums or contact one of the admins, Tarna or Petite Main with any questions or concerns.

    Thanks for joining our wikia!

    • One small note.  I did read that about page several times before adding/editing anything.  I'm not seeing anything there or in the FAQ's about formatting/editing - only general helps, nothing specific to the Vintage Patterns Wikia.  I don't know if I'm missing it, or it's just not very clear - but thanks so much for reaching out to me.  I appreciate it. And I appreciate the continuity too.  :)

So it's large picture, description of pattern, & copyright directly under it in regular text, followed by a more detailed description if desired, also in regular text, and then followed by the headers with lines for the other 4 areas (links, sources, gallery, wishlist)?

And is it acceptable to delete dead or sold links from the sources section if I come across them, or are only the owners of those stores supposed to do that?

        Loading editor
    • There is a pre-formatted template for users..  Please start there when creating a new page.

You will find it on the Home page under the big Create button.

If you are in visual editor, the sample image link may not let you change it.  Ignore it and upload your picture separately, or switch to the classic editor.

While owners of the links are supposed to delete them, many are not diligent about this.  It is acceptable to remove sold and clearly expired links.  Just be careful with on hold and vacation type unavailbilities, as well as temporary server outages, which can happen anywhere.  When in doubt, don't delete.

    • Ok thanks!  All very helpful...I'll go look for the template.  With a project like this uniformity isn't boring, it's important for continuity & gives the whole site a professional, well-maintained look.  I'm happy to conform.  :D  Sorry about the flu, hope you're feeling better soon!
